Diving into the Depths of Deepfakes

With the progression of AI, concerns about potential misuse have taken center stage. One particular concern is DeepFakes– a technological marvel that has empowered the creation of hyper-realistic videos, audio recordings, or images by manipulating the appearances of individuals. No one, be it political figures or celebrities, seems immune to this harm.

Advisory Echo: A Call for Action

Even though there are existing legal laws to protect individuals from cybercrimes, we all have witnessed the virality of Deepfakes. In response to this, government came out with an advisory for all platforms emphasizing their role in preventing the spread of misinformation, and urged them to be in compliance with applicable law.

With pressure being given from governmental bodies, it has become more important than ever for every start-up to prioritize compliance with all the existing data privacy regulations whether it’s the Information Technology Act, 2000 or the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023.

We urge all entrepreneurs to conduct a due diligence to ensure:

-       robust internal documentation are in place to ensure there is no breach;

-       conduct a periodic compliance checks; and

-       implement the technical safeguard as set forth by the law.

The ability to swiftly and efficiently adhere to these regulations will not only safeguard the interests of start-ups but also foster a trustworthy digital environment for all stakeholders.
