So, why has this feature attracted so much attention?

Until now, your phone number has been your identity on WhatsApp. If someone wanted to contact you, they needed your number. With usernames, users can instead share a unique handle, similar to Instagram or Telegram, while keeping their phone number private.

From a privacy perspective, this is a welcome move. Whether you're buying something online, joining a community group, attending an event or connecting with someone for work, you may no longer have to disclose your personal phone number. It gives users greater control over their personal information.

At the same time, it is important to understand what this feature does not change. WhatsApp usernames do not make the platform anonymous. Every account will continue to be linked to a verified phone number. The username simply allows users to choose what information they share with others.

The discussion, therefore, is about finding the right balance. Users want greater privacy and better control over their personal information, while regulators want to ensure that these benefits do not come at the cost of security and accountability.
